## Definitions
### What is a slice?
A slice is a cross section that uses LiDAR data to render a 2D image of real world artifacts. Measurements along the rail corridor are taken from the left (running) rail-head to the objects and structures that surround it for each slice.
Slices are represented using the SCN file format when treated as system input / output files, which informs specific fields in the database.
### What is a structure?
A structure is any physical asset along the rail corridor, such as a platform, bridge, tunnel, mile post, etc. Typically, clearance measurements are made from the rails to the surrounding structures.
### What is a survey?
A survey is a collection of slices, grouped according to logical inputs / outputs and/or business specific data workflows. Surveys include data that relates to the physical measurements, and this information is encompassed in each individual slice.
Surveys currently have three entry points into Cordel Connect:
1. Direct upload through Cordel Connect from Cordel capture hardware.
2. Upload through a REST API provided to third party organisations.
3. Data migration from customer provided BYOD (Bring Your Own Data).
## Where can I search for a Slice, Structure or Survey?
To search for a Slice, Structure or Survey, navigate to Gauging>Slices/Structures/Surveys
The landing page for each entity is the search page, and has slight variations to the searchable fields and sort options, depending on the entity you search for.
## Which fields can I search by?
This depends on whether you are searching for a Slice, Structure or Survey.

## How do I search for a Slice, Structure or Survey?
Each of these entities has a search form and search results. Common search functionality and practices are outlined below. Whilst there are some differences in the searchable fields and sort options, the search functionality in this article is consistent across Slices, Structures and Surveys.
### How to show/hide the search form
Click the (Filters) icon in the top right corner to hide/show the search form
### How to search multiselect fields
> âšď¸ Some of the searchable fields are multi-select forms, that have the ability to search on more than a singular selections.
For example survey status could have both âReady for submissionâ and âReviewâ selected. This will return any surveys that are either in âReady for submissionâ status OR âReviewâ status.
## How to reset the search form
Click the reset button shown below to remove all current search criteria
## How to sort the search results
1. Select the âSort byâ dropdown
2. Select the option you wish to sort your results by
## How to change the number of search results shown
1. Select âRows per pageâ dropdown at bottom of table area
2. Select an option, that is not current option
3. Check that number of rows in table matches selected option
Once you have found the entity/s you wish to view in more detail, click the corresponding blue hyperlink to open it in Slice/Structure/Survey Viewer.
> đ You can also *right click *the blue hyperlink and choose to open a survey in a new window or tab. This keeps the survey search screen open for later use.
