## What Is A Slice?

A slice is a cross section that uses LiDAR data to render a 2D image of real world artifacts. Measurements along the rail corridor are taken from the left (running) rail-head to the objects and structures that surround it for each slice.

Slices are represented using the SCN file format when treated as system input / output files, which informs specific fields in the database.

## How To Search For Slices

1. > Macro (anchor)

From the main menu, select Gauging> Slices > Macro (anchor)

2. Find the slice you wish to view on the slices search page. Note, you can apply a range of[ filters and sorting options, which are detailed here](https://corridor1.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TCSD/pages/2648475747).

## A. Cross Section Viewer > Macro (anchor)

### Cross Section Viewer: Overview

The Cross Section Viewer is component of the Slice Viewer Page and the Edit Survey Page. This component gives a view of a slices points in relation to given structure gauges and profiles, as well providing options for further interaction with the slice.

### Navigation in the Cross Section Viewer

The slice points are rendered on a canvas that allows for zooming, dragging, and selection. Controls for these are as follows:

- Left Click - Select point.
- Left Click & Hold - Drag to draw selection box, all points in box on release are then selected.
- Middle Mouse Click & Hold - Drag to move around the view.
- Middle Mouse Scroll - Zoom in and out of view.

The Fit View button is also available to reset the view of the slice. This button is highlighted in red below.

### Keyboard Shortcuts in the Cross Section Viewer

The following shortcuts are defined for quicker cross section viewer interaction:

- Ctrl + Z - Undo Changes
- Ctrl + Y - Redo Changes
- Ctrl + S - Save Changes
- Delete - Delete Selected Point/s

### Cross Section Viewer Points

Slices are made up of multiple points which are displayed on the viewers canvas. Points can be selected and have data edited through the tools in the toolbar. Hovering over a point will give some information about the point, such as point position, attribute value and distance to profile. Both the SC0 coordinates and viewer coordinates are given. The SC0 coordinates are the coordinates gathered from the measured points .SC0 files, and are calculated based on their position in relation to the left rail. The viewer coordinates are the coordinates of the point on the canvas, plotted on cartesian plane. The distance to profile is the distance between the point and the currently selected profile, so changing profiles will update this value.

![image](media://9c70a2e6-9c17-40b4-a530-af3d31e16110)

As mentioned, points have an attribute value, these are related to point attribute values outlined in the related documents and standard. Some of these attributes will be represented by different styled points. These styles can be seen in the attribute legend tooltip, seen when hovering over the information icon in the toolbars context area.

### Cross Section Viewer Toolbar

The toolbar of the Cross Section Viewer provides extra functionality for displaying and editing data.

**Cross Section Viewer: Context Area**

This area shows information in relation to the context of the mouse’s and viewers state. The following information is given:

- The selected tool
- Mouse X position
- Mouse Y position
- Zoom level

![image](media://56f381ee-c09c-4594-949e-fc2b26b6427d)

**Cross Section Viewer: Details**

This tab gives the details of the current slice, and if available details of the superseded slice (displayed in same format if available). The following information is given:

- Gauge (Clearance)
- Distance
- Radius (With associated direction indicator)
- Superelevation (With associated slope indicator)

### Cross Section Viewer Tools

This tab gives multiple tools for adjusting and interacting with slice data.

**How To Save in Cross Section Viewer**

The save button will save any current changes of the slice to the database. This action is only available if there are changes that have been made.

![image](media://04716170-79f9-484d-b955-d8bba3351a34)

**How To Delete Points in Cross Section Viewer**

The delete button will remove any selected points. These changes have to be saved for changes to persist when leaving page.

![image](media://22846dd2-2675-4e9b-a429-057291b4c68f)

**How To Undo in Cross Section Viewer **

The undo button will undo any changes made. This acts as a stack, so multiple changes can be undone in the reverse order they were made. These changes have to be saved for changes to persist when leaving page.

![image](media://6dc0ffaa-bec6-4d12-8f3e-8f79ab35c506)

**How To Redo in Cross Section Viewer **

![image](media://ccfa370a-7e41-496e-b249-e388037ca656)

**How To Use Mirror in Cross Section Viewer**

The mirror button will flip all points around the Y-axis. This function is done through a call to the server to calculate the new points. Mirroring will also update track geometry displayed in the details tab. These changes have to be saved for changes to persist when leaving page.

![image](media://486ac4d8-633b-421f-a6de-48432cb1f123)

**How To Use Flip in Cross Section Viewer**

The flip button will flip all points around the Y-axis. This function does not update geometry such as superelevation and radius. These changes have to be saved for changes to persist when leaving page.

**How To Add a Point in Cross Section Viewer**

The add point button allows you to manually add points to the profile. The points will appear in the location that the mouse is in after you toggle on add point mode. Points can be continually added while in add point mode. Once you have finished adding points the mode can be turned off by switching to another mode in the tools section.

![image](media://0df8b1c6-2b17-48de-a404-d591f43031f5)

**How To Measure in Cross Section Viewer**

The measure button will toggle the tool mode onto measure. In this mode, clicking anywhere on the canvas will create a measure point, and clicking again elsewhere will create a second measure point. A line is drawn between the two points giving the distance between them. This distance can also be seen after the first measure point is placed, between it and the mouse, updating as the mouse moves. A measure point can then be selected and moved, by clicking and dragging, to update the distance and point position. A measure point can also be deleted with the delete icon or shortcut (`Delete` key). When toggled off the tool will default back to select.

The change point attribute dropdown allows for a selected point/s attribute to be changed to any option in the dropdown list. Some attributes have specific styles to them (different colour or icon) to represent their attributes. A legend of these styles can be seen by hovering over the Attribute Legend tooltip icon. These changes have to be saved for changes to persist when leaving page.
